Have you ever heard of the phrase ‘workplace anxiety’? This is greatly common within those who suffered a bad experience at work, or someone who has only just graduated and never had a job before. Sadly, this sort of anxiety can take control as early as the application stage and even during interviews, which may prevent you from taking opportunities that are available to you.

1. Tell your employer

One of the most common questions individuals have is whether they should inform their potential or current employer about their mental health; especially during the interview stage. Essentially, it’s your choice and how comfortable you feel talking about it, but if there are adjustments that need to be made within your role, you might feel better getting it off your chest.

Mental health is now widely spoken about, so really, you shouldn’t be discriminated against for letting your guard down and telling the truth about your circumstances. Even though it is important to discuss your situation, don’t let it define your whole interview or persona. There’s so much more to you than being a bag of anxiety. 

2. Talk to someone at work

Some individuals may have workplace anxiety because they’re unhappy with their job role. As a result, they bottle up their feelings and carry on as normal, without any help from others. This is the worst thing that you can do. Don’t be afraid to reach out to a colleague you can trust, if you feel as though you are struggling. You might surprise yourself and feel better that someone is listening and looking out for you when you’re having one of those anxious moments and need some support.

3. Set realistic deadlines

Anxious individuals usually agree to deadlines and targets they know they probably can’t meet, putting themselves under needless pressure. If you have newly joined a new company, you may not be clued up on what’s a reasonable quantity of work to take on and agree to anything that comes your way, just to please others. 

If you have any doubt about the tasks you’ve been set, be honest and upfront about how your feeling and make sure your voice is heard. This is so you can work at a manageable pace. This will prevent any avoidable stress later on down the line.

4. Stay connected

When you feel at your most anxious state within the workplace, a natural reaction is to cut everyone off around you. The difficulty with avoidance is that you’ll only have to face it at a later stage. That knotted feeling in your stomach will only worsen if you refuse to talk with your co-workers or employer when there is any form of disagreement, confusion or worry. So, keep communication flowing in order to resolve problems as soon as they emerge.

5. Practice self-talk

Constantly thinking about how bad you are at your job or you’re struggling to control the situation only increases your anxiety and causes you to go into a meltdown. Research has shown that if you’re able to change your thinking patterns, your behaviour and performance will follow.
